Parking Numbers
School Parking
For the 21st Century
Most local councils now have detailed and separate parking standards for a wide variety of building and land uses. Many councils now acknowledge the unsustainability and undesirability of providing a parking space for every member of staff, and have followed the Government's plea to "promote sustainable travel choices". In any case, all councils are now required to set a maximum
number of parking spaces to be allowed for a given type of development - in other words, a developer may choose to provide fewer than the maximum permitted number of spaces, but will not be allowed any more.

The following lists the published maximum numbers of parking spaced to be allotted for primary schools in a number of local authorities, some of which are urban areas, some suburban, and some rural:
Gateshead1 per 2 staff plus 1 per 200 pupils
Salisbury 2 per 3 staff plus 1 visitor space per 7 staff
York 2 per 3 staff plus 1 visitor space per 45 pupils
Swindon          2 per 3 staff (including ancillary) plus 1 visitor space per 7 staff
Glasgow    1 per 2 staff
Southend  1 per 2 daytime teaching staff
Wrexham  1 per classroom
Stratford 1 per 2 staff plus 1 per 4 ancillary staff
Enfield     3 per 4 staff
Hull   1 per 50 pupils
These councils have adopted different ways of arriving at a final figure, but all show their clear intent to force schools if necessary to find alternative ways of getting staff to school (or maybe to selectively employ staff who live near the school).
